I first met Ms. Javelet in June of 2022, when she was a student in my Health Assessment Across the Lifespan course at the UC Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing in the Masters Entry Program in Nursing (MEPN). I had the pleasure of working with Ms. Javelet again thispast Spring quarter during the Advanced Medical Surgical Clinical course. Ms. Javelet’s educational background from the UC Davis, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing and her Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Portland State University combined with over a decade of diverse healthcare and customer service-related experiences uniquely prepare her to be an ideal candidate for your new graduate nursing program.

When Ms. Javelet and I spoke about this opportunity and this letter of recommendation, I was pleased that the characteristics she was interested in highlighting dovetailed with my own perceptions. The strengths Ms. Javelet brings to this position include her compassion, professionalism, and leadership skills. Ms. Javelet has demonstrated her ability to work in the highly complex and fast-paced patient care environment. Ms. Javelet has developed excellent time management skills both on and off the unit. While making steady progress in our accelerated graduate nursing program, Ms. Javelet has maintained a 4.0 GPA. Demonstrating her compassion, Ms. Javelet has dedicated time and energy to helping her peers succeed. Prior to each Medical-Surgical exam, Ms. Javelet organized and hosted Zoom reviews for her classmates to go over any study guides and answer questions.

She has consistently maintained the highest professional standards. There was an instance where a miscommunication between myself and Ms. Javelet’s clinical instructor during the first week of the Advanced Medical Surgical course. This miscommunication resulted in assignments not being completed as per my expectations. I am still struck by the way Ms. Javelet communicated with me on behalf of her clinical group. She preserved the professional relationships with her clinical instructor while simultaneously advocating for herself and her peers.

Ms. Javelet has been a dependable leader in the MEPN program. She serves as the fundraising officer for the MEPN Graduate Student Association (GSA). The GSA aims to promote student engagement in community outreach and provides professional development events and NCLEX preparation resources to its members. Ms. Javelet has successfully organized several fundraising events that have generated over $5,000. These funds have been instrumental in supporting her cohort's community outreach initiatives. Ms. Javelet is eager to learn and dedicated to her work. I am sure you will find Ms. Javelet to be a highly motivated, competent, and committed member of the new graduate cohort. I enthusiastically recommend Jen Javelet for a position in your new graduate nursing program.

I served as a clinical instructor for the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. I met Jen as a member of my first quarter cohort and she stood out early on for her attitude of engagement as an active learner.

One component of my teaching style is the regular use of the Socratic method. While many of her colleagues would stand quietly by as I posed questions about cases or circumstances, Jen would routinely try to answer the questions, even if she was unsure. I specifically recall making a post to our class discussion page with a request for optional replies… Jen was the only student who chose to engage in the discussion with me.

During our clinical lab sessions, she was routinely one of the last students out as she chose to re-engage with skill stations. As we were concluding the IV skills section, Jen returned to the station and requested to try it again before she left. She then asked if she could take home some supplies to spend time simply handling the devices and developing muscle memory and familiarity, a recommendation I make to all new learners.

As she progressed through her program, during which I was no longer teaching, she contacted me several times in a desire to learn more about my experiences as an ED, critical care, and rapid response nurse. In this fashion, she reminded me of a one-time nursing student who approached me after a code and who I ultimately began to mentor as she started at UC Davis as a new grad. The similarity to this nurse reflects exceptionally well on Jen for this nurse rapidly progressed through her time on our ENT unit and now is a clinical resource nurse in the PICU.

Regarding Jen’s time as a student at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, I offer the following quote from G. Jacob Alley, RN, BSN, a clinical resource nurse, in an unsolicited email: “Overall, I was very impressed and can’t say enough good things about (her). (She has) been well-mannered, respectful, helpful, responsible, caring, & extremely inquisitive with excellent questions… (she) has a very bright future ahead. “Like Jacob, I was impressed with Jen’s attitude and willingness to ask (and answer) questions and her consistent energy as an active learner.

In my role as an Action/Rapid Response Nurse at UC Davis, I have the opportunity to work with nursing colleagues throughout the facility, experienced and new grad alike. I’ve been privileged to work with many new grads and help support them in their novice-to-expert transitions. Jen shows all the signs that indicate she will be an excellent nurse who will be an asset in any clinical setting.
